ARVADA, Colorado – Middle school students from Arvada-area schools competed in the 2023 National Civics Bee regional competition last evening at Revive Church. The event was hosted by the Arvada Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the Colorado Chamber of Commerce and the Civic Trust of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation.

Students competed with their peers in a live quiz event and answered questions from judges to test their civics knowledge. The top three finalists from the Arvada competition will have the chance to participate in the state-level competition hosted by the Colorado Chamber of Commerce in Denver on May 19, 2023.

Winners of the Arvada-area civics bee include:

  • 1st Place: Tally S., Falcon Bluffs Middle School
  • 2nd Place: Ella E., Mandalay Middle School
  • 3rd Place: Sriram Y., Drake Middle School

“We are so proud; all nine students represented their schools and our community exceptionally well today,” said Arvada Chamber President and CEO Kami Welch. “It’s been an honor to host the National Civics Bee and play a small role in developing an active pipeline of civic engagement in Arvada. We can’t wait to root on our students at the state level!”

The first-place winner of the local competition received a $500 cash prize, and all three finalists are invited to participate in the statewide competition. All participants in the state competition will receive a tablet device as a prize from the Colorado Chamber. The top three winners of the state competition will receive cash prizes of $1,000 for first place, $500 for second place, and $250 for third place.

The event was hosted by Jefferson County Commissioner, Andy Kerr, and sponsored by Colorado Healthcare Advocacy Information Network (CHAIN). The judges for the event were City of Arvada Mayor Marc Williams, Danielle Varda (CEO of Visible Network Labs), and Jansen Tidmore (President | CEO, Jeffco EDC).

During the quiz portion, students answered 20 multiple-choice civics questions. These questions included:

  • To ________ means to remove regulations.
  • “The Congress shall have power to lay and collect taxes on incomes, from whatever source derived,…” This amendment is often referred to as the __ Amendment.
  • Where would you find the following text in the U.S. Constitution? “No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President;…”
  • If the president can no longer serve, the speaker of the House is __ in line for presidential succession.

Five students then advanced to the Essay Q&A portion, in which they summarized their submitted civics essays and answered questions from the three judges. The topics of these essays included solving gun violence in schools, food insecurity in our community, and incivility.

“We’re thrilled to recognize young Coloradans interested in civic engagement and to inspire the next generation to be involved in shaping our communities,” said Colorado Chamber President and CEO Loren Furman. “We congratulate this year’s winners from the Arvada competition and look forward to seeing them next month in Denver!”
