The Civics Bee is Coming to Arvada on May 1!

April 07, 2025

On May 1, 2025, the Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce will host the 2025 National Civics Bee competition in Arvada for the third straight year. Organized in partnership with The Civic Trust® of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, the competition in Arvada will inspire middle schoolers to become better informed about American democracy, to engage respectfully and constructively in the community, and to build greater trust in others and institutions.

Middle school students from public, private, charter, and home schools were invited to take part in the first-round civics essay competition. A distinguished panel then chose the top 17 students to move on to the next round of competition: a live quiz event to test their civics knowledge. The Chamber will host this event in person on May 1, 2025 at Revive Church. The finalists will receive various prizes, including $500 cash for the first-place student, and the top three students will proceed to the state competition!

This year’s event emcee is Andrew Kenney, editor at Denverite (Colorado Public Radio). Andrew Kenney became the supervising editor of Denverite in 2024. He covered state politics and policy for Colorado Public Radio as a reporter from 2019 to 2024, and previously was a reporter at The Denver Post, Denverite and The (Raleigh) News & Observer. He says that society works better when people understand their government and each other.

The judges for this year’s events are Commissioner Rachel Zenzinger (Jefferson County), Amanda Gonzales (Jefferson County Clerk and Recorder), and Sharon Davis (Arvada City Council).

“The Greater Arvada Chamber is deeply invested in facilitating engagement with local policy and elected officials for our businesses and community,” said Greater Arvada Chamber of Commerce President, Kami Welch. “The National Civics Bee is a unique opportunity for us to develop an active pipeline of civic engagement in Arvada and strengthen the way we all live, work, and learn together in the future.”

This event is complimentary to attend. This year, attendees can also play along with the contestants from their phone with our Audience Quiz. We will also have a Sign Station from artSPARK Creative Studio for attendees to create a sign of encouragement. Event sponsorships are also available on the event page. Thank you to Common Spirit Health and Comcast for sponsoring this year’s event!

Join us on May 1 to celebrate civic engagement and knowledge amongst the future leaders of Arvada!
